About us
A downtown Pittsburgh institution, Nicky's Grant Street is a classic diner rooted in family, tradition, and the simple pleasure of a well-made meal. Located in the historic Grant Building, it has been a steady presence on Grant Street for decades, welcoming generations of locals and visitors alike.
Founded in 1985 by lifelong restaurateur Nicky Geanopulos, the diner carries forward a deep family legacy in Pittsburgh's food culture. That legacy began with his grandfather Thomas and father Clifford, who operated restaurants in Market Square during the mid-20th century. In the years that followed, Nicky and his brothers expanded the family's footprint with The Doggery hot dog shops and the La Pizzaria chain, both remembered fondly by Pittsburghers from the 1970s through the 1990s.
From the start, Nicky's became more than a place to eat. It evolved into a daily gathering spot for downtown professionals, judges, attorneys, and longtime regulars who returned day after day for coffee, conversation, and familiarity. For more than 30 years, Nicky's mother, Athanasia, known affectionately as Mrs. G, greeted guests from the register, setting the tone with quiet grace and genuine warmth. Her presence helped define the spirit of the diner, a spirit that remains today.
Today, the tradition continues with family at the heart of the experience. Guests are welcomed not only by familiar faces, but by the sense of continuity that has always defined Nicky's. Alongside the diner's beloved all-day breakfast, hearty lunches, and classic Pittsburgh comfort food, customers also look forward to Tamara's daily specials, which have become a favorite part of the weekly rhythm and a reflection of the care that goes into every meal served.
Simple, timeless, and deeply local, Nicky's Grant Street remains a place where Pittsburgh gathers, just as it always has.
In 2010, the Pittsburgh City Council honored the restaurant's 25th anniversary by declaring March 16 "Nicky's Grant Street Day," a tribute to the role the diner has played in shaping the culture and rhythm of downtown life.
As the restaurant celebrates 40 years, the Geanopulos family extends sincere thanks to the loyal patrons and staff, past and present, whose support has made this milestone possible.
